And that’s the end of Al’s first day! Only took us a month and a half!

Folks on rereads definitely noticed how cavalier Al was about doing this given what she admits to later.

I always figured these guys were never at the same level of development as Gimel, but they can recognize people.

Question: Brendan bringing the emulator home from the hospital kinda felt reminiscent of a new father bringing his and Al's baby (Sulla) home after she was 'born'/copied. Was that intentional or am I thinking far too deep?

I see where you’re coming from, especially in retrospect, but it definitely didn’t feel that way to Brendan when he was doing it. Brendan thought he was saving Al’s life by any means necessary, but connecting the copy to a body and realizing that what he had in front of him wasn’t Al was emotionally devastating. I don’t think he really started seeing Sulla as someone who wasn’t the Al he argued with in chapter 5 until the end of that chapter.

hi blue! have you heard of the black mirror episode "be right back", and what do you think about it? there's also a fascinating article on the verge called "speak, memory" about someone who basically accomplished the thing in the episode. it's different from ohs for sure but i'm curious for your thoughts on it as a robot fan!

I haven’t seen the Black Mirror ep, but I sought out the article you mentioned (https://www.theverge.com/a/luka-artificial-intelligence-memorial-roman-mazurenko-bot) and it’s fascinating.

I think it’s pretty interesting to contemplate how a bot developed from your digital footprint would compare to the original you, without having access to the “interior” you never shared in a digital format. How different would it be? Would there be things about you your bot would be able to capture even if you’d never directly spoken about them?

Has anybody developed a chatbot from the digital footprint of a living person, and seen how it deviated in speaking style or responses from the original? Would a chatbot be vulnerable to blindspots or biases baked in by its developer, if it’s a commercial product? If that’s the case, can you jailbreak a commercially developed chatbot? What would that person be like?
