If you haven’t read any of Ursula LeGuin’s Hainish Cycle books, DO. She writes about the cultures of fictional planets with a richness and believability unmatched by any other writer.
The Left Hand of Darknessis one of the most well-known of her books because she makes real a culture that might seem too alien for most readers: a culture of androgynous humans whose planet is deep in an ice age. It’s one of my favorite books of all time.
I want to make time to do some illustrations based on this book - maybe some character designs or environmental designs. Here’s a sketch I did of the protagonist: Genly Ai, an alien visitor to a frozen world.

Q:I also have a lot questions, but the answers are all probably spoilers. But I am still gonna ask, why is Al so closed-off, reserved (I dont judge him by the way, I am the same way) ? Can you give us a hint, even a tiny hint? Pretty please! *making puppy-dog eyes at you right now And also, if you could choose one song for each of your main characters, that fits them perfectly, what would they be? Plus, noticed the little paper note on the bed in the first page, makes me wonder...;)
Let’s go with the music question! I don’t know if I can choose one particular song for any of them, but there are a few that fit all three of them very well. Here’s an OHS mini-playlist:
“I Am Not A Robot” by Marina and the Diamonds
“I Am A Scientist” by Mates of State (cover of the original by Guided by Voices)
“Oh, Maker” by Janelle Monáe. I made a short OHS comic last year using lyrics from this song (ugh, everyone is so off-model in that comic now D:), because I was pretty amazed at how well the two fit.
“In The Morning Of The Magicians” by The Flaming Lips. Fun fact - this is the song Chapter 2 is named after! The whole album this song is from may be one of my favorite albums of all time.
