It’s them!!! I’ve sometimes seen Tsade described as Anubis-like, but I’m pretty sure its design was influenced by images of the Set, who’s based on an animal we still don’t entirely recognize.

Al’s first line in the comic was very intentional, especially when you compare it to Sulla’s later in the chapter.

Let’s start talking about the color palette! The red on this page is related hue-wise to the flashback color palette, but this red is exclusively for dramatic effect in the blue “future” sections.

The context for the note (and the fight) we’ll get later in Chapter 5 was something I’d decided before I started drawing the comic, and stayed pretty close to the original outline! The story grew in quite a few ways, but a few major beats were always there.

What I distinctly remember about working on this chapter is that I did not discover’s Photoshop’s “press shift and click to draw a straight line” trick until I was halfway through. You can definitely tell looking at these early pages.

Here’s the first appearance of what readers started calling “the blue fairy,” though I never gave her a name and she’s more influenced by Alphonse Mucha illustrations. Totally works thematically, of course!

I drew the first page when I was 22 and I’m trying to take comfort in the difference between my art here and the final page I drew when I was 30. I grew a lot!
The events of O Human Star begin on February 2, 2021.
